Evaluation

For my project I had to design and make my own new music magazine and decide on a name for it. I first of all had to come up with four pages. I had to write up an article about a new singer or group. I had to design a front cover, contents page and a double page spread. After I had designed it I then had to make it. I made my music magazine on my own. I contributed to everything as I worked on my own.

I think my publication will attract the pop readers who are into new Indi music. There are also articles to attract the broad audience of magazine user, we could state Q magazine is the type of magazine that would publish similar articles that I have in my publication. Bauer Media Group, who publish Q magazine would I think be interested in publishing my magazine as it is the type of magazine that covers many aspects of the music scene.
“Q modestly calls itself "The World's Greatest Music Magazine," and it is difficult to argue. Although it is based in the UK, there is plenty of information in Q to keep an American pop fan coming back for more because it features many American bands. Each monthly issue is full of reviews of albums and music-related movies, DVDs, and books as well as current download lists, great interviews, coverage of key events in pop music history.

Also we could include Entertainment Weekly which has been in existence since 1990 and is therefore still a relative newcomer to the world of popular music reporting. This magazine has many writers and reviewers which make it interesting reading. Also Entertainment Weekly is the only US publication bringing you music news in paper form on a weekly basis.

N M E would be another music magazine I think would market my style of publication owned by I P C Media (Time Inc) this magazine is known for introducing new approaches to media reporting in the form of what’s new in the pop world. My magazine with its up to date articles and references gives a critical eye on what’s new.

Mojo is a popular music magazine published by Bauer, monthly in the United Kingdom this magazine simular to Q magazine is again the type of music magazine that would fit into the genre of my magazine it covering many aspects of the music scene.

My magazine Musicxpress is unique in this circle as it offers to the reader many other activities to encourge them to buy, it has competitions, give aways, competitive price which is due to a small publishing team.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
My music magazine is for ages twelve to twenty five mainly, however older people might buy it, it would appeal to any ethnic group. The socio-economic status for my music magazine is C1 to E. My media product would also have a special interest to Indi fans. This is a good audience because there are a lot of Indi fans who would buy this magazine and keep on buying it because they have disposable income. If they keep on buying the magazine they will generate profits. I would have a second audience because I might just get general pop fans buying my music magazine.
I did get positive audience feedback for my magazine, some comments for the front cover were that it was colourful and appealing and also that it looked professional. However one person commented that they would use different text fonts. Some people thought it was busy but balanced well. Everybody thought it was typical of a music magazine, and thought it is an appropriate target age. The majority would buy my music magazine because they thought that if it was on a shelf it was eye catching because of the vibrant colours. Somebody in my feedback thought that there should be a female face on the front cover to attract both male and female.
The feedback from the contents page was good overall however somebody commented that there were missing page numbers.
The double page got lots of positive comments saying it had a good layout with lots of information however some thought that the text was too small and it needed a slightly larger photo of all the group together.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I wanted to attract my audience by choosing a title that would be easy to remember and expresses what the magazine is all about. It stands out from the rest of the front cover because it is so bold and bright. The key image takes up most of the front cover. When you look at the image the picture is smiling at you so it makes it personal and friendly, and also makes it look attractive. The contents and language of my front cover is very colourful and upbeat which makes it look appealing. It advertises things that people will want to read more about. The range of articles in the magazine on the contents page shows a lot of variety. The pictures make it look more interesting and make it feel quite friendly. The contents page is also very bright and colourful and the layout makes it easy to read.
The headline on the inside page is very simple and easy to see. The inside article has been structured in a question and answer format for every member of the band. On my double page spread I have given a little introduction to the band and I have also given all of the band’s names. In between my questions and answers I have featured a picture of each band member who I have interviewed which makes the article interesting for the reader. The most appealing thing about this double page spread is the US tour because it stands out. It is big and bold and draws the eye to read it. The ideologies of the band on the inside article are that they are all friends and they are all clean cut, which gives out a good image of a young up and coming band who are talented.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?

While I did my research on my project I used the internet to find out and look up music magazines that were already out there. I decided to use Google and then I typed in music magazines and found a lot of information on different types and genres of music magazines. I uploaded three different examples of music magazines onto my blog. The software that I used was good for my music magazine because it had all of the tools that I required to make my music magazine. The software allowed me to import pictures and put things into boxes. The software that I used was called Adobe Photoshop and Adobe In design. It also allowed me to import pictures and shrink them without distorting them, so that I could put them where I wanted them to go. I had to sort out my double page spread because it had big white gaps between certain amounts of writing and therefore it did not look right.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I feel that I have learnt how to make my front cover much more interesting than my preliminary task because the image is a lot bigger. I have used a variety of fonts and colours which make it a lot more affective, and I think that this will appeal more to the reader and make them want to buy it. The title is a lot bigger and it makes it clearer to the reader what it is as it has to shout out from the shelf at you.

Conclusion

Overall I think that the front cover gives out a very positive message with the happy faces, it looks bright as if it is fun to read. The inside page is interesting because it has a lot of information about the group with pictures. It also has column in it which shows you the tour dates for the US. This is good because it is bright and stands out from the rest of the article. The choice of colours was very varied to make it more eye-catching. My weakest page is the contents page because it could have a lot more on it such as an editor’s letter and readers comments which would make it more interesting. If I was to produce it again I would take in to account the feedback from my questionnaires and perhaps have different fonts on the front cover and include a girl in the photo. To improve my inside page I would have slightly larger print and a group photo.

This is my perliminary task. I choose to do my perliminary task like this because it tells the story of what was happening at St Mary's at this time. You can see from the front of the magazine that it is busy and that it is packed up with stories to read. The colours are very bright and so they attract who ever wants to buy it, it would draw them towards it. I am quiet pleased with how it came out in the end.

Evaluation

For the evaluation of my dtp project I had to answer some questions on how it went. I also had to write about what I liked about my project and what I did not like about my project.
